Artist's Comments

This is probably my favourite piece that I've ever done. It's a bit ruined because of the flash point there at the top, but that's just a bit distracting rather than ruining the piece's message.

This was done my senior year of high school for my Senior Studio art class. My artist's statement for that year was to illustrate myths, folklore, legends and the like and this one is that of the Native American myth for the dreamcatcher.

Each element in the piece is a symbol. I put a lot of thought into the piece.
-The woman makes up the dreamcatcher, she symbolizes new beginnings, Mother Earth/Gaia and similar ideas.
-The dreamcatcher itself is a symbol of the ability to harness dreams.
-The dark shadows in some of the spaces are nightmares, those things that the dreamcatcher is supposed to capture and keep from entering the person's sleeping mind.
-The spider is, according to the myths, the one who gave the Native Americans the dreamcatcher in the beginning.
-The butterfly is a symbol of hope, of peace.
The gray feathers are eagle feathers and symbolize strength while the shorter, brown feathers are owl feathers, which symbolize wisdom. Both types of feathers can be found on traditional dreamcatchers.
-The beads are also something that can be found on a traditional dreamcatcher.
-And, finally, the sun. In the early morning, the sun is supposed to rise and hit the dreamcatcher, burning away the nightmares.
